Literacy Collaborative

Literacy Coach Training

Intensive professional development (230 hours) across 12-15 months that prepares a literacy coach to implement the Literacy Collaborative Framework in a school. Literacy Coaches develop the capacity to train other teachers on-site at the building level through professional development and coaching.

Principals' Academy I & II (open to principals, superintendents, and curriculum specialists)


Principals' Academy I is designed for administrators, superintendents and curriculum leaders in Literacy Collaborative schools or those considering joining the Literacy Collaborative network

Study the key role of the principal, how children learn to read and write, ways to support the Literacy Coach, how to quickly appraise the classroom environment, and how to increase student achievement.

Using Fountas & Pinnell's Continuum of Literacy Learning to Guide Teaching & Learning

Participants will investigate reading, writing, and word study behaviors and understandings. Video examples of teaching and engaging activities are designed to deepen current understandings about best practices while grounding observations in the Continuum of Literacy Learning.

Guiding K-3 Writers to Independence: The New Essentials

An intensive seminar to help teachers work effectively in developing independent writers. Participants will receive a professional book by Patricia Scharer, Gay Su Pinnell, and the literacy trainers at The Ohio State University.

When Readers Struggle

When Readers Struggle: A Closer Look at Guided Reading K-2
Date: Jan. 27, 2012 Time: 9am-3:30pm | Registration Closed

Participants will learn how to move their readers through increasingly complex texts with ease by expanding their knowledge and craft of planning just-right book introductions, prompting and teaching for effective use of strategic actions and conducting comprehension conversations. Planning and note-taking guides that support teachers use and understanding of the reading behaviors outlined in Fountas and Pinnell's professional text Continuum of Literacy Learning PreK-2 will be introduced.

This seminar focuses on sections of this new publication by authors Gay Su Pinnell & Irene C. Fountas. The presenter(s) will use video examples of instruction at levels A through L. Topics that will be explored include:

  • Learning to Solve Words
  • Using a Systematic Framework for Intervention Lessons
  • Extending reading Power through Writing
  • Teaching for Fluency in Processing Texts
  • Analyzing Reading Behavior to Determine What Learners Need
  • Teaching for Comprehending: Thinking Before, During, and After Reading

KEEP BOOKS Workshop

KEEP BOOKS Workshops are offered periodically. Past participants have:

  • Learned how to integrate KEEP BOOKS into a learning environment.
  • Discovered how to establish a school/home book program with KEEP BOOKS.
  • Found out how KEEP BOOKS can be matched with state standards and how they can be used to help children develop comprehension skills.

On-Site Professional Development is offered by The Ohio State University Literacy Collaborative staff. Our trainers have expertise in the following areas:

The fee for On-Site Professional Development is $2,100 for a full day plus travel expenses. Attendance for the on-site event is limited to 50 participants. District Level Support

District Level Support will be designed and customized with careful consideration for the specific needs of a district. Services may include but are not limited to:

  • Assessing data
  • Site visits
  • Presentations on reading/writing
  • Literacy teaching
  • Coaching support
  • Designing an in-depth study on coaching

Single Site Visit

A primary or intermediate literacy expert will come to your site to work with appropriate personnel to help increase literacy achievement in your school/district.
